Medicare’s New GLP-1 Bridge Program: Certain Weight-Loss Drugs for $50 a Month

There is big news for Medicare beneficiaries who have been looking for help paying for GLP-1 weight-loss medications.

Beginning July 1, 2026, Medicare launched the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, a temporary nationwide program that gives eligible Medicare beneficiaries access to certain GLP-1 medications for a $50 monthly copay.

Which GLP-1 Drugs Are Covered?

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge currently covers:

• Foundayo® – tablet

• Wegovy® – injection or tablet

• Zepbound® – KwikPen® only

The program does not cover single-dose Zepbound® vials or pens.

How Much Does It Cost?

If you qualify, you pay $50 for a one-month supply of a covered GLP-1 medication.

One important thing to know is that the GLP-1 Bridge is separate from your normal Medicare Part D drug coverage. This means the $50 copay does not count toward your Part D deductible or annual out-of-pocket limit.

Who Qualifies?

You must have Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage and meet Medicare's eligibility requirements.

Eligibility is based primarily on your BMI and certain health conditions.

You may qualify if:

• Your BMI is 35 or higher

• Your BMI is 30 or higher and you have certain conditions, such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, diastolic heart failure, or stage 3a or higher chronic kidney disease

• Your BMI is 27 or higher and you have certain conditions, such as prediabetes, a previous heart attack or stroke, or symptomatic peripheral artery disease

There are additional eligibility requirements and exclusions, so having Medicare and taking a GLP-1 medication does not automatically mean you qualify.

How Do I Get Started?

If you think you may qualify, talk with your doctor or healthcare provider. Your provider can prescribe an eligible GLP-1 medication and, when required, complete a prior authorization.

Your provider must also certify that you are using the GLP-1 medication as part of a lifestyle program focused on diet and exercise.

The Bottom Line

For Medicare beneficiaries who qualify, this is a significant change. GLP-1 medications that previously may have been difficult or expensive to access for weight management could now be available for just $50 per month.
